This year we have combined tradition with elegance to make a beautiful Island Garden. In this miniature garden we have created a small green space within a circular rill surrounded by luxuriant planting. The seating area is easily accessible across the lawn but for fun could also be approached via stepping stones. The garden was designed by Colin Squire and planted by Jim Philips.
Within the colourful border we are showcasing a brand new plant called Verbena Seabook's Lavender which has small but vibrant purple flowers. Named after the well known gardening writer and broadcaster Peter Seabrook.
Colin Squire said "Islands have fascinated people for thousands of years whether on the River Thames, in a lake or far out to sea. Hadrian used a large scale island in designing his famous Tivoli gardens in the first century and many Italian classical gardens developed the theme. Many an artificial lake in British landscape tradition would not be complete without an island often with a small temple or building."
