Meet WWII Bomber Command Veterans at Squire's
06 August 2009
Squires Garden Centre
Badshot Lea: 1.00 pm on Wednesday 12 August
West Horsley: 1.00pm on Wednesday 19 August
The crucial role of the men of Bomber Command in freeing Europe from Hitler's tyrannical rule has never been properly recognized in Britain by medal or memorial. In partnership with the veterans of the Bomber Command Association (BCA), the Heritage Foundation has launched a national campaign to erect a memorial in London. The campaign is also supported by the Daily Telegraph.
Jim Dooley, of 70's pop band The Dooleys, will be at Squire's Garden Centre, Badshot Lea, at 1.00 pm on Wednesday, 12 August, together with some of the veterans.
All the men who flew with Bomber Command were volunteers and their average age was just 22. Out of every 100 men who began an operational tour of 30 missions just 27 would complete it, the rest being killed, captured or invalided. Bomber Command lost more men in one night during a raid over Nuremberg in March 1944 than died in the entire Battle of Britain.
To help raise funds for this memorial, the BCA has appointed Artique Gallery Publishing Limited to launch a range of rare photographs taken between 1939 and 1945. The images are very rare and have been donated by RAF Hendon and Charles Brown, who was the official Air Ministry photographer during WWII.
Cards featuring these photographs will be on sale at Squire's Garden Centres and the veterans at Badshot Lea on 12 August and West Horsley on 19 August will be happy to sign any cards and prints purchased on the day.
