Lucky Plants for Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year begins on the 1^st February 2022, and this year is Year of the Tiger, an animal that symbolises confidence and bravery.

As well as the twelve animals of the zodiac there are many fascinating traditions surrounding Chinese New Year, such as putting up lanterns and red decorations, family gatherings, huge feasts, and fireworks at midnight to banish evil spirits. But did you know that it is also tradition to bring home an auspicious houseplant or two?

Plants and flowers hold special significance during Chinese New Year, and certain ones are thought to bring good fortune, luck and prosperity. Here are some lucky houseplants for your home:

Lucky Plants for Chinese New Year

1. Orchids (Phalaenopsis) – a beautiful plant that symbolises fertility and innocence, and an abundance of luck.
2. Kalanchoe Calandiva – its rosebud like flowers with intense colours are thought to bring luck and prosperity.
3. Daffodil (Narcissus) – a symbol of good fortune and prosperity, it is one of the most auspicious flowers in Chinese New Year. The golden centre represents money.
4. Orange Trees (Citrus calamondin) – the orange looks like the sun and is a symbol of happiness. Bringing an orange tree home is said to give you a fruitful and abundant year.
5. Money Tree (Pachira aquatica) – rubbing the fat ‘Buddha Belly’ at the base of this tree is thought to bring financial success.
6. Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) – said to bring wealth, luck and good fortune, they are especially lucky when given as a gift.
7. Chinese Money Plant (Pilea peperomioides) – because of its round, coin-like leaves, it is thought to bring prosperity to the household that displays it.
8. Flamingo Flower (Athurium) – a plant known for its air purifying qualities, and red heart-shaped flowers which are meant to bring joy and peace.
9. Bonsai – an elegant miniature tree, believed to bring good luck and harmony.
10. Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) – this plant is said to bring luck throughout the year. There are five elements that make a Lucky Bamboo even luckier; the earth element of stones surrounding the stalks; the metal element of decorative gold coins or a metal pot; the water element used to feed the plant; the fire element of a red ribbon or pot; and the wood element of the bamboo itself.
