June Gardening Tips 2022

June is such a lovely month because there is so much to enjoy in the garden. It is a great month for pottering, a little planting, a little dead heading, feeding and weeding but most of all just appreciating the abundance of leaf form and beautiful flowers which are coming into their own but still with the promise of so much more.  And then there are the birds and insects who are all so busy at this time of year.

June is also the best month of all to enjoy the scent and colour of my favourite flowers of all – Roses. Back in 1977, the year of Her Majesty’s Silver Jubilee,  we held our first Rose Show at our Shepperton garden centre. This became an annual fixture and a highlight of our year. The only years we have missed in the 45 years since 1977 were 2020 and 2021 – for reasons we all know only too well. It seems very fitting that the show should be back in 2022 for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee,  as we express our admiration and celebrate Her Majesty’s seven decades of service to our country and the Commonwealth.  Once again, the show is held under the auspices of the Rose Society UK and we expect outstanding blooms brought to Shepperton by exhibitors from around the country. There will also be a display of floral art from Walton and Weybridge Flower Club. I do hope you can join us on 25 and 26 June. Further details are to be found on our website.

In our garden, apart from enjoying the roses, we are tying in climbers and staking perennials that have put on significant growth. This will prevent their stems from snapping in the wind and keep them from flopping over other plants. There is some dead heading going on to encourage a second flush of flowers from our cottage garden plants and to promote our bedding plants to continue to flower. Pots and hanging baskets are being fed and watered and a close eye is being kept on the vegetable patch.

There is still time to indulge in some suitably exuberant and colourful planting in advance of the Jubilee weekend, especially if you are welcoming family and friends for an outdoor get together. Above all, I hope you enjoy the Bank Holiday and the rest of the lovely month of June.
