The 2nd Long Ditton Brownies recently visited Squire’s Garden Centre in Long Ditton to see how many potatoes they had grown in Squire’s “Grow Your Own Chips” competition.
The Brownies previously visited Squire’s back in March, when they were shown how to plant up their own pot of potatoes and how to care for them.
Each child’s potatoes were dug up and weighed, and the winner was Imogen Koller who received a prize pack from Squire’s. All the Brownies got a goody bag – which included a Spearmint Herb, a colourful insect on a stick to put into their herb pot, and a packet of Sunflower Seeds – and the event went towards their “Grow Your Own” badge.
Once the weigh-in had taken place, Squire’s turned all the potatoes into chips in their Café Bar. The children had a “s-mash-ing” day and found the chips very “a-peel-ing”!
Anne Dedman, Manager at Squire’s in Long Ditton commented:
“All the Brownies really enjoyed the experience and produced quote a crop of potatoes between them! We also produced a Potato Facts quiz for the children to complete which they had fun doing. However the highlight of the evening for the Brownies was tucking into their chips which looked amazing!”
