Green Manure Winter Rye Seeds

Green manure winter rye seeds are one of the best overwintering options. These plants grow through much of the winter, producing fibrous roots that improve soil structure and reduce compaction. Sow them outdoors in February to march and dig them in the same year or from early august to November to overwinter. Broadcast the seed, cut the plants back as needed, and dig them into the soil before they set seed. They're excellent for any soil and can be mown before flowering to extend coverage, leaving them in the ground until you require the soil but avoiding seed formation.
