Onion Bedfordshire champion seeds - Bedfordshire champion onions are favoured for their large, well-flavoured yellow to light brown globes that have excellent keeping qualities. Start indoors for larger bulbs by sowing them 0.5cm deep in a seed compost tray. Keep them well-watered and maintain a temperature of 15-20°c. Once large enough to handle, transplant them 5cm apart to other trays. Gradually acclimate young plants to outdoor conditions before planting them 23cm apart. Alternatively, sow them directly outdoors in well-prepared soil, 1.5cm deep, with 30cm between rows. Expect seedlings to emerge in 14-28 days. Thin the plants to 23cm apart. Bedfordshire champion onions appreciate well-dug, fertile soil. For optimal ripening, gently bend down the foliage as it starts to turn yellow. Allow the onions to dry before storing them in a cool, dry room.
