Meet the Apprentices
Zac Mercer, Chef
Apprentice
While working at Squire’s Badshot Lea, Zac is attending college to complete his Chef Apprenticeship, “I’ve also learnt a range of knife skills, including which knives suit the task at hand, how to chop quickly and accurately and how to sharpen them properly,” said Zac. “Blunt knives are just as dangerous as sharp ones!”
“There are great benefits to working here, the hours suit me well, I work alternate weekends and there are no evening shifts, plus there are discounts for both the Café Bar and garden centre. The staff and atmosphere are great; everyone is friendly and I feel really supported.”

Freddie Reeder, Horticultural Apprentice
“I started in Shepperton and throughout the year have been to multiple sites and training courses. I applied for the apprenticeship because I had the chance to learn with different people. My favourite time is spring, with the different colours and plants available; including my favourite theme, “Rustic”. I’m ending the apprenticeship with a stronger knowledge for horticulture and confidence.”
“There are multiple benefits to working with Squire’s: the discount in store and the cake, the chance to meet new people and the shift patterns are good as well – alternate weekends off and not working more than 4 days in a row.”

Keegan Marshall, Horticultural Apprentice
“I’m on the Squire’s Apprenticeship, which they sponsor me to go and do. I was offered this opportunity after doing various different tasks at one of my old garden centres. They could see I have an eye for gardening and horticulture.”
“It’s a great as they go really into detail with different aspects of horticulture and if you work at the garden centre or not, it’s a great opportunity to go and expand your knowledge.”

Debbie Nugent, Horticultural Apprentice
“The apprentice program allows me a greater understanding of the commercial part of the business. All the apprentices attend the Plant Manager meetings and are encouraged to meet the suppliers at the annual Plant Show. I have been involved with the ordering of stock and seen how much experience is required to know your customers and order just the right stock, weather permitting.”
“Overall, I really enjoy being a Squire’s Apprentice, the opportunity of academic learning and retail experience is unique and allows for a great insight into the business.”

Jo Wenban, Horticultural Apprentice
“I’ve worked with Squire’s for over 5 years in various departments. I’ve wanted to work in the plant department and the apprenticeship seemed the best way to do that. We attend college as apprentices and I enjoy it a lot. I have many favourite plants – I love hostas, acers, roses… the list could go on!”
