Night Garden Plants

Here are some ‘night garden’ plants chosen by our experts. They have selected some of their favourite plants that have a beautiful fragrance at night or are particularly reflective in the moonlight.
Chris Carpenter – Plant Area Manager at Squire’s Milford
Here are some of my favourites that I have in my own garden. They all give a beautiful fragrance at night.
Nicotiana sylvestris (tall tobacco plant) – Elegant long white tubular flowers that have an intense fragrance that is released in the evening as the sun sets. Perfect for planting at the back of borders or in pots.
Night scented Phlox (Zaluzianskya ovata) – A lovely compact plant with small fragrant white flowers that are pink on the back of the petals and are highly scented in the evenings. Flowers during the summer and is great for adding to pots or even hanging baskets, so you can smell them from head height.
Trachelospermum jasminoides (Star Jasmine) – My number one climber! It’s evergreen and loves a warm sunny position. It can even be grown in a pot too. It has star shaped flowers during the summer that are highly scented.
Theresa Scattergood – Plant Area Manager at Squire’s Washington
The plants I have chosen are white, as they show up well in a busy garden, and stand out when the light fades in the evening.
Phlox paniculate – I love a white Phlox as its flowers stand out in a mixed boarder in the day, and as night falls the scent is wonderful and becomes even more fragrant. Phlox paniculate is easy to grow and it comes back every year.
Honeysuckle – It’s my absolute favourite scented plant and I think ever garden should have one! Lonicera ‘Scentsation’ is a really good variety. It’s very easy to grow and has a profusion of creamy white flowers throughout summer, which have a deliciously sweet strong perfume. The scent is particularly strong at dusk and will make you want to go into the garden or take an evening stroll every night throughout the summer!
Dianthus Memories – This hardy plant has large double white flowers which are extremely scented. Ideal for boarders or patio pots.
Jeremy Hall – Plant Buyer at Squire’s
Two of my favourite plants to enjoy at night are:
Trachelospermum jasminoides (Star Jasmine) – Very fragrant white flowers that reflect the moonlight and smell even stronger at night.
Wisteria – Long hanging flowers available in blue, pink and white which are highly fragrant and even stronger at night.
