Tallest Sunflowers Bring Charity Cheer

Runner Up Imogen from Woking, with her 3.9 metre tall sunflower
Winner Henry from Badshot Lea, with his 4 metre tall sunflower
Runners Up Tom and Lily from Badshot Lea, with their 3.8 metre tall sunflower

In May, we launched our Tallest Sunflower Competition, with each of our centre offering a free pack of sunflower seeds to children, in return for a voluntary donation to the local charity linked to each centre.

Equipped with their packet of seeds – and our handy sunflower growing guide – children were charged with planting their seeds, nurturing the plants and watching how tall their cheery flowers could grow over the summer months.

The wait is over, and it can be revealed who the winners are!  The tallest sunflower was grown by Henry from Badshot Lea, whose sunflower grew to an impressive four meters tall!  Henry has won a £100 of toys from Squire’s, and runners up who were not far behind, Imogen from Woking – who’s sunflower grew to 3.9 metres and Lily and Tom from Badshot Lea, whose sunflower was 3.8 metres – will receive a £50 Squire’s Gift Card.

Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres, comments: “Judging by the terrific photos we’ve received, children have had great fun growing their sunflowers and have been dedicated in the care and attention shown to their plants, which is fantastic to see!  We are really keen to encourage children to get involved in growing their own plants and the response to growing the tallest sunflower clearly captured the imagination of many of our younger customers.

“It’s also great to know that the initiative has helped 16 of our local charities.  The money donated for the sunflower seeds amounted to over £1,000, supporting Squire’s ongoing commitment to raising vital funds for important local organisations.”
