Sunflowers are easy to grow from seed and are ideal for growing with children. Follow our step-by-step guide to grow tall and healthy sunflowers!
April to May – Plant seeds
Plant seeds individually in pots, place on a windowsill and water regularly. Cover pots with a clear plastic bag to help maintain heat until they germinate.

May – Nurture seeds
Once seedlings appear, remove the plastic bag. Continue watering regularly. Transfer to bigger pots when seedlings are large enough to handle.

May – July – Plant outside & look after
Once risk of frost has passed, plant the young sunflowers in a sunny spot outside, water regularly and feed. Stake your sunflower to help support the weight of the head. Fasten the stake using plant ties or garden twine.
To protect your plants from slugs & snails, use a product such as copper tape to prevent damage to your plants.
